Justine asked for some ideas of what others are doing in Primary schools with a view to low cost quick healthier counter snacks for the younger grades.
- Rice crackers [ like you use with dip- sold individually or two in a twist of paper]
- Watermelon wedges
- Orange quarters
- Fruit chunks on a stick [ or straw or paddlepop style stick]
- Pikelets
- Roasted sunflower seeds
- Ratpack- cheese cubes and crackers
- Frozen yogurt chunks- yogurt and fruit frozen in ice cube trays and sold individually
- Frozen juicies- ice cube chunk sizes or 50 ml containers of fresh juice that has been frozen
- Dip and veg sticks
- Boiled eggs[peeled but whole]
- Muffins
- Cookies- fruit ones made onsite
- Pocket bread with melted cheese
- Cheese puffs[ low fat puff pastry sprinkled with cheese , slice and twist then bake]
- Vegie puffs- same as above but add vegemite under cheese
- Sultanas
- Grapes- sold in a twist of paper with 3 or 4
- Air popped popcorn
- Snow flake popcorn- same as above only with little sprinkle of icing sugar
- Hot pops- air popped popcorn with little sprinkle curry powder or paprika
- Muffins – fruit or savoury
- Frozen milky moo- Milk with little dash vanilla and colouring frozen into ice cube trays, or use flavoured milk
- Tiger muffins- English muffin toasted, spread with vegemite then a half slice of cheese cut into strips and layed across [leaving gaps between] melted in oven
- Snack packs bags with any of the following- cheese cubes, crackers, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, celery sticks, sultanas, grapes, snopeas, capsicum strips, dried fruit
- 50 ml yogurt tub- buy 1 ltr yogurt in bulk and put in smaller containers
- Marching ants- celery stick filled with philly cheese sprinked with sultanas
- Walk the plank- celery sticks filled with peanut paste or philly cheese[ note some schools may not be allowed to use peanut products]
Note- vacuum sealers and food dehydrators help with snack packs and quickly end up paying for themselves.
