In 2011 our P&C committed to improving our business practices across the board. During our assessment period we found some major failings in the processes and procedures that would ensure a safe, attractive and profitable tuckshop. Though our organisation has many highly skilled volunteers, the extent and seriousness of some of these failings, balanced against the long servitude of our staff member, placed our organisation in an extremely volatile situation and we needed expert assistance.

This year we carried out a review of our tuckshop through Tuckshop and Canteen Management Consultants. We found Jocelyn to be very friendly and extremely helpful to work with. Her report was very extensive and the tools she supplied us with most beneficial in our tuckshop moving forward. She has helped us in every aspect of running a successful tuckshop – to which we are most grateful.
Stretton State College
In July 2011, Stretton State College was asked by our Parents and Citizens’ Association to take over the operations of both our Primary and Secondary Canteens. Whilst we were excited at this opportunity, we really had a daunting job on our hands. There were some issues we had to deal with and the canteen sales were relatively low, even though we are a school of 1700. This is where Jocelyn was our “knight in shining armour”.
Burnside State School
Burnside State School P&C decided to use the services of Jocelyn Ashcroft (Tuckshop and Canteen Management Consultants) to help implement procedures and processes that had not yet been initialised.
The Executive team found the written quote to be very set out and detailed. It wasn’t a unanimous decision at first, as some members were concerned about the price. After considering the information over the next month and breaking it down into sections of what we were actually going to acquire, it was soon very clear to everyone that Jocelyn’s price was justified.
Crescent Lagoon State School
Crescent Lagoon State School P&C started 2011 with an entire new Executive. Although new to our roles, we identified that our tuckshop was in need of an upgrade to comply with standards. Problem areas such as menu quality, hygiene standards, recruitment and education of volunteers and an effective system of costing our menu were some of the areas we targeted. We had the added complication of having to hire a new convenor as well. The difficulty was who would interpret the standards and then introduce them. Parents of the P&C are often involved in many activities already and time is something no-one seems to have enough of.

I was lucky enough to attend a workshop that you presented at & knew immediately that you could help at our Tuckshop. I had got to a stage where I didn’t know where to turn to get more Profit from the Tuckshop or make it more exciting for the kids. The Tuckshop is now moving in the right direction again & the children love the new ideas that we are implementing. I would just like to thank you very much for your knowledge, skills, patience, understanding, consideration & warmth that you showed us during your visit. We can only improve from here with all the thought & ideas that you have given us. THANK YOU
Alligator Creek State School
Having been President of the Alligator Creek State School P&C (Mackay region) since 2008, we made a conscious decision in our 2010 annual plan and associated budget to review the operations of our tuckshop. We knew from our balance sheets that the tuckshop had run at a loss for some years and that we were not compliant with Education Queensland’s Smart Choices tuckshop practices. Our goals of the tuckshop review were therefore twofold:
1. To turn the annual tuckshop loss into an acceptable profit.
2. To increase the compliance against Smart Choices tuckshop practices to ensure our 460+ school children have access to healthy foods and drinks.
We were pleased to be advised of the services of Jocelyn Ashcroft from Tuckshop and Canteen Management Consultants. After the P&C Executives met with Jocelyn to discuss our goals and objectives, she completed the 2-day review onsite in August 2010 by incorporating existing tuckshop staff and several P&C Executives before receiving her comprehensive and reader friendly 21-page report, including operational models. We are proud to report that after implementation of Jocelyn’s suggestions, our tuckshop recorded a profit in term 4, 2010.

We have had a number of long term issues relating to the tuck shop at the school. The school has approximately one thousand students as well as a large number of staff. Previous executives had spent a number of years working on problematic and wide ranging issues. Under my leadership the new executive also spent close on a year with the same issues. We were not making significant progress. We were advised that Jocelyn Ashcroft at Tuckshop and Canteen Management Consultants should be considered.
She was professional throughout the whole process. Her experience was made evident in that within a short time she was asking all the right questions. Following her on site visit she was able to, not only provide the executive with an analysis of the root cause of the core issues, she also provided a step by step way forward. This was followed by training of the executive and staff to allow the reforms to start to be rolled out.

The service that Jocelyn provides was recommended to the Bulimba State School P&C by EQ. In essence the service is both comprehensive and supportive. The service commenced with meetings with the main stakeholders of the service (i.e. P&C Tuckshop subcommittee, P&C Executive, Convenor, Principal, and several teachers, students and parents) to establish an understanding of the complex and interrelated issues that had contributed to the service being unprofitable and unappealing for an extended period of time. A significant amount of time (3 days) was also spent observing the tuckshop operation, reviewing the financial systems, policy and procedures manual….

Jocelyn Ashcroft has recently completed an audit of both our Junior and High School Canteens. Been a relatively new Prep-12 school we have struggled to find our feet with the operation of our canteens. Jocelyn has provided excellent support and reference materials for our Canteens.
Jocelyn is a very approachable and professional person who has vast experience in school Canteens. The assistance and report that she provides was very concise and invaluable for the growth and success of our Canteens.

Our school tuckshop was closed because of the lack of volunteers. We engaged Jocelyn Ashcroft to assist us to open the tuckshop utilising the correct EQ procedures, smart choices menu and employing a paid convenor. Jocelyn was an important part of the interview panel and also the induction process. The tuckshop opened 3 days a week with a paid convenor and numerous volunteers to assist. It is running at a profit and it also caters for various events such as walk a thons, fetes, staff meetings and other various school events.

“We greatly value Jocelyn‟s input. Each semester we get her out for a visit to „audit‟ our operations. Her breadth of knowledge of school canteens, honesty of approach and ability to make suitable introductions have been a terrific asset to the Whites Hill canteen.”
